The Perfect Recliner for My Sports Loving Husband

My husband is an all around sports guy, but if it came to him having to choose one and only one sport, I know that it would be football. If he had to narrow it down to one team, it would be the Saints. We've lived in California and we're now living in Illinois, and yet he remains loyal to his Saints. That's why i'm pretty sure that anything I could give him as a gift would be a great gift to him if it has the Saints logo. I'd LOVE to be able to get this Saints Recliner for him.

A recliner is something that he's wanted for some time and this one looks absolutely comfortable. It's made of microfiber. I have microfiber blankets and I know it to be soft to the touch and that's something i'm sure i'd love ~~if I could ever get him off of it~~ whenever i'd get the chance to sit in it. Mommy, Is Daddy Sleep?

This is a picture of my precious 3 year old. Remember, he was the baby. And he reigned as baby longer than any of our other children had. He and I had gotten pretty close too. How I spoiled him. Not long ago, my oldest son moved his toddler bed into their room because he wanted him to be with the rest of them, at least for that night. His bed has been there ever since.

It seems he's not quite accepted that abrupt move into the big boy room. It wasn't done with the intention that it would be permanent, but apparently my hubby thinks that it was a good thing.

Lastnight he came to our door. All of his other siblings were asleep. "Mommy is dad deep?" he asked. "Huh?" I said. I don't always understand everything he says. He's been a little on the slower side picking up with speech (but trust me he makes up for it in wittiness). "Mommy is dad deep?" he asked again. I told my husband I think he's saying mommy and daddy, thinking he had something to say to the both of us. When my husband answered, he cried and began to walk away.

"Wait a minute. Come back." I said, feeling heartbroken because he was hurt and I didn't understand why. He opened the door and I asked him again what he was saying. "Is dad deep?" I figured he was saying is dad sleep, and so I asked him if that's what he was saying. "Yes." He was waiting for his dad to fall asleep because he knows that dad's going to send him back to his big boy bed if he's awake. I was so touched by how emotional he'd gotten, and after talking with his dad, we invited him in to stay the night. He gladly came in and greeted "his" baby and talked with me to the best of his ability and put his arm around me. It's still hard letting him grow up.

The items I received were Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a 5 ounce size, a S2HSTEP pedometer, Mèreadesso Face and Neck Toning Gel, Emergen-C Vitamin Drink Mix and a Prevention Magazine + a 1 Year Subscription.

I was just using olive oil lastnight in place of just any other old oil and doing so just made me feel good because i've heard positive things about olive oil in the past, which I will hopefully get around to sharing in one of my health tips posts.

Yes I do realize I personally do need to walk more, but the cold weather makes it somewhat inconvenient at this time. I mentioned how my husband's job requires lots of walking, so i'm thinking i'll pass it on to him. I think he'd really like to know how many steps he takes daily. I told him that I think i'm starting to see the effect of all the walking he's doing, and I think a pedometer will inspire him to walk a little further. Next is the Mèreadesso Woman face + neck toning gel in a 1.7 oz size. Pretty much enough said right there. I don't know if i'm personally ready to use it, but perhaps I can find someone if I decide that it's not for me.

Emergen-C. This one is a bonus for me. I can totally use this with 5 kids with whom i'm home all day. It's tangerine flavored and is packed with 24 nutrients and 7 B vitamins. Designed to give me energy . Yes!

Are You Getting Enough Water?

You've probably heard different takes on how much water you should be drinking. I've heard at least three. One says that you should drink at least 8 cups or 64 ounces a day. Then there's the one where you do a little math factoring in your weight. Most recently I heard just drink until you feel satisfied.

Whichever holds true, the fact is that you need to make sure that you're getting water. Our bodies consist of a large amount of water, and will let us know when we're not getting enough. You also want to make sure not to overdo it at the same time, because there is a such thing as water poisoning.

Getting enough water helps to flush toxins from our bodies including our vital organs. The benefits include clearer skin, less fatigue, and a better chance that we'll consume fewer calories.

There are some things I notice that happen to my body when i'm not getting enough water such as yellow urine. The more yellow it is, the more dehydrated. I also notice that I may have little bouts of dizziness or a mild headache. Please do note that these can be symptoms of other health complications, so be sure to have a doctor rule out the possibility that anything else is the cause.

I know that bottled water is a big deal for many. That was our way to go up until recently. I've been hearing some negative things that have really swayed me from purchasing pre-bottled water. My husband, whose job requires that he do a lot of walking and manual labor, decided to purchase a water bottle that he can easily refill. I decided I want to get one too, and just seeing it serves as a reminder to drink water. It's even gotten to the point that I want water without seeing it, which I count as a good thing. I do recommend the use of a water filter to remove at least some of the contaminants.

I like the size and the style of it. It holds 28 oz. It's designed so that it could hold a freeze stick
(sold separately), it's BPA free (very important in my decision making), it has a mouth big enough that I can see to it being cleaned well (to prevent bacteria growth), it has the loop on the top which makes it easy to carry or perhaps even hook onto something. I also like that it has a straw, or you could remove the straw if you'd like and just turn it up to drink from it.

This bottle is double walled, prevents condensation and is designed for hot and cold fluids. I did have to return the first one that i'd originally purchased because it was defective. It would get plenty of condensation and water was getting between the inner and outer walls, but since exchanging it, everything seems fine so far. This bottle ran us right at $5 and so far is proving to be totally worth it. As far as testing to see how hot or cold holds up, I haven't really done much. So far i've only used it for cold water, which seems to be reasonably kept cool.

This was my personal decision for a water bottle and no i've not been paid or even asked to share this with you. Hopefully, though, this will help if you had no idea of what to look for when purchasing a bottle intended to be reused. What's most important is making sure you're getting enough water :).

My Thoughts in Relation to That Last Post

Altering something natural that would have worked just fine in its original state just so that you can slap a patent on it and make money off of it is just selfish and greedy. Forget the value of human life and how we'd all like to lead normal ones. We trust these people to help us to get better, but all they really care about is fattening their pockets. Killing us at our expense.

I think it's absolutely crazy how medical and pharmaceutical industries can bribe a doctor's office with perks such as vacations, gifts and who knows whatever else to get their drugs upfront in their offices. I personally know someone who says that although this activity is supposed to be illegal, it's still done.

I also think it's crazy how the FDA approves so much without appropriate testing being done and only when it's too late for many is that drug pulled and you start to hear about if you took such and such a drug or have a loved one who suffered or died you can join in on a lawsuit.

I don't know about where you live, but it seems that it's becoming all too common for a doctor to recommend an x-ray or a cat scan. I have a family member who has a knot on her finger and after having an x-ray, the doctor recommended a cat scan! Radiation and more radiation. I've heard that radiation causes cancer and personally think that more discretion should have been used.

These things just concern me and i'm venting. Hopefully without sounding commercialized. It just saddens me because I turn to them for myself and my children and don't want to see one thing get better while another breaks down and it's absolutely not called for. Hopefully you have a doctor who values human life and is truly concerned about your and your family's well being.

I do not and will not claim to know it all, but again, I do hope that somewhere along the way, i'll be able to help someone, somehow with my past and hopefully current and future research. I also want to remind anyone that the things i'll be sharing are informational and not meant to replace doctor visits, follow-ups or advice by any means.

What i'm sharing is from a local doctor. I happened to get my hands on this newsletter because my Pastor and his Wife are both on a HCG diet apparently under this doctor's supervision (with amazing results if I might add!) and my husband noticed how much weight they'd lost and wanted to know more. Pastor's wife gave it to me so that I could find out more information on this diet, but there was more that I found interesting that was shared and I wanted to pass on. Feel free to copy and paste this post if you'd like. It reads as follows:

My patients often ask me why other medical doctors and the public media never discuss the same advances in medicine that I talk about. Here are some examples of their questions: "I feel so much better treating my PMS with bioidentical progesterone cream. Why don't other doctors prescribe it?"

"Why don't we hear about the increased risks of developing breast cancer or infertility from synthetic hormones and birth control pills?"

"The HCG diet you recommended was terrific in helping me to lose weight quickly and easily. Why don't we hear about this program in the media?"

"If fish oil is so great, why doesn't my psychiatrist or my husband's cardiologist recommend it to us?"

"Why doesn't my OB doctor ask me about my prenatal nutrition?"

"If your cesarean section rate was only 6%, why is the national rate over 30%?"

The answers to these questions are based on economics. Many of the treatments that I recommend are based upon substances that occur in nature such as progesterone, HCG, or fish oil. A substance that occurs in nature cannot be patented. In order to receive a patent, pharmaceutical company chemists must make some change to the chemical structure. The new substance, then protected by a patent, can be manufactured and sold at a higher price.

A simple example is progesterone. Progesterone not only relieves PMS symptoms in premenopausal women, it also improves bone strength, protects against breast cancer, and is essential for supporting the normal development of a pregnancy. A synthetic equivalent, Provera, has two minor additional chemical groups tacked on to the progesterone molecule. It is promoted as a synthetic progestin with some similar effects to progesterone, but unfortunately it also has many adverse effects. The synthetic version has the following adverse effects: instead of protecting an embryo, it will kill an embryo; instead of protecting against breast caner it will cause breast cancer; instead of protecting against heart disease, it can cause abnormal blood clots. Thus, even a minor change in chemical structure of a human hormone can result in significant changes in its physiological effects.

Drug companies are not economically motivated to promote natural remedies that do not generate significant profits. Also doctors become entrenched in recommending treatments that they have used for many years. As a physician it is difficult to change what you have been recommending, or what you were taught in the past. Changes in a doctor's practice may be perceived as an admission that previously he has not done the best for his patients. For example, breast thermography is a promising technology that detects heat differentials in the breast without exposing the patient to any harmful radiation. Breast cancers stimulate new blood vessel growth, which results in greater warmth in the surrounding tissue. If thermography were to be found superior to mammography for detecting breast cancer, it would be difficult to change the habits of primary care physicians, gynecologists, radiologists and oncologists who all have been avidly promoting mammograms for many years. Furthermore the hospitals that have made significant investments in mammography technology would be hesitant to spend additional money to replace their existing units with thermography machines.

Economic entrenchment in the enormous inert structure of the medical care system makes it difficult to change the status quo. Positive changes need to emerge from the patients who have experienced success with alternative treatments and who have spread the word directly to their friends and relatives and to a wider audience through online social networking.

During my lifetime, La Leche League instituted the greatest revolution in medicine that I have ever seen. In 1958, a group of seven mothers in Franklin Park, Illinois, got together in their homes to educate themselves about breast-feeding. issues, because their doctors knew painfully little about the subject. Doctors at that time were extolling the virtues of feeding infants formula. This mother-based network eventually spread nationally, and then internationally. A modest grassroots movement expanded and forced the pediatricians and infant formula manufacturers worldwide to change their advice and outdated positions about feeding babies. This example shows how powerful your voice can be. I encourage you to speak up about your positive results with alternative medical treatments. By spreading the word, you can stand up against the medical and pharmaceutical industries that make billions of dollars promoting their own interests, whether or not they are in the best interest of the consumers.

Here's To Your Health

Let me first begin by saying that no, I am not the healthiest person. I don't always drink enough water, but that's actually something i've been doing pretty well with lately. All because my husband bought me a nice BPA free water bottle that serves as a reminder just to have it in sight. I could just pat myself on the back. There is a lot more that I don't get right either. Among them being consistently taking daily vitamins, getting the sleep I need, and even, get this, eating right.

It's obviously always best if you can prevent sickness and disease with a healthy lifestyle. This isn't always possible, though, and we can credit our environment and the way our foods are processed among other contributing factors for this.

Even though this is true, I am always intrigued when I find out natural ways to take care of health related issues. I have never been a fan of doctors, doctor office visits, or prescription medications. Especially prescription medications. I have a tendency of trying to find out side effects and the information that you find when reading can be so discouraging. I mean, who wants to sacrifice sanity (I know this is an extreme example) so that they can relieve an allergy because of some prescription medication? If there's a natural way to take care of a problem, i'd rather take that route, or at least get as close to natural as possible.

Yet, there is still some reason I am drawn to this information. Perhaps I was meant to be a doctor. Not a traditional one, but a natural one. And on that let me take a pause and let you know that I am not; and as a disclaimer the information that i'm sharing here is not intended to replace doctor visits, advice, or medications by any means, but just information that i'm hoping anyone who is interested can find useful, and as i'm sharing the things that i'm learning, hopefully i'll be drilling them into my head all while learning something new and exciting. It just makes me feel a little giddy, though, when a family member comes along and says something like their gout is flaring up, and I can turn back and say well try some cherries and back off of the red meat.

I also find information that is shared by others through the social networking sites that i'm involved with and also on Yahoo and even other sites. If it's practical, I hope to share this information as well from time to time.

New Breads from Sister Schubert's (p.s. i'm in love)

For the first time to my knowledge, I had the pleasure of trying Sister Schubert's breads. I connected with them just in time to try their two new breads. The first one that i'm going to focus on are the new Soft Pretzel Rolls pictured above.

According to the package they're just like restaurant style rolls. I hope i'm not beginning to look like i'm too out of the loop, but i'd never tried pretzel rolls before. Now that I have, I do hope that any pretzel rolls that I have anywhere else would taste as good as these by Sister Schubert's. They've really set the bar high. The texture on the outside is truly like that of a freshly baked pretzel with a soft, delicious center. These tasted oh so delicious with butter slathered on them, but of course you could use them for mini sandwiches which would be great for lunchtime or anytime. My kids loved them too, so they're ideal for the entire family.

They come 6 to a pack and they're packed individually, so there's no breaking them apart. You take out only what you need. If they're frozen, they'll be ready within 7 to 9 minutes. If they're thawed, it only takes 3 to 5 minutes. Can you say great finishing touch to a comforting dinner?

The other bread that we were privileged to try were the Mini Baguettes. When I removed these from the oven and went to cut into them, they were perfectly crisp and crackly on the outside with a soft center. I honestly didn't know what my kids would think of these, but they liked them as well.

The Mini Baguettes also come 6 to a pack and are also very easy and conveniently quick to prepare at 7-9 minutes if frozen and 4-6 if thawed. Convenient again because they're individual rolls. Now I personally used them for sandwiches, but couldn't resist seeing what they were like with butter. Great both ways. The packaging also suggests serving these with extra virgin olive oil and fresh herbs as an appetizer or snack or as a complement to any meal, which I can totally see.

Some other things that i'd like to point out about the Sister Schubert's breads that we tried are that they are free of preservatives, trans fats, and artificial flavors. Sister Schubert's gets major thumbs up because they taste really good to me, my children love them, and they can quickly and conveniently be served alongside or as a part of any meal.

Baby Update

Baby is now 3 months and 2 weeks. My how time is flying. Our little guy is, well, not so little. Some people have even guesstimated him to be 6 months!

Milestones:

At around 2 months, I noticed he started to swing those arms with clenched fists. Imagine getting a left hook from a baby on your lap. Fortunately there's still not a lot of muscle behind that.

He never has been a rough sleeper, but he's gotten even better and I also have the opportunity to sleep more as well, but I can't say I always take that opportunity.

He's a strong little guy. He does fairly well with keeping his head upright and even standing (supported of course) on his legs. He still doesn't have full control and if he topples over a bit, he needs help to get back into position. He's strong enough that I can sit him up (attended) in a nice comfortable corner of the couch so that he can get another view of things going on around him.

I have to be sure and keep his cute little nails clipped, because he's discovered that his hands are operable. I find myself getting pinched and squeezed and the things that he grasps often head for his mouth. Slobberville. He even reaches for things that I may be holding, including my iTouch. When i'm playing a game. Goodbye new high score. And it's so totally worth it.

Brothers and sister love him more than a new a toy. They're still excited about holding and smooching him and he's showing them that he loves them right back with smiles and giggles and little goo-goo eyes and loving stares.

And what's going on with me?

I've settled into this thing of going to bed late. It's become a bad habit that I need to break because I find myself fatigued throughout the day and napping like a preschooler. I have housework that needs desperate attention and i'm also trying to get settled back into a blogging pattern. That about sums things up, but hopefully i'll figure this out again. Real soon.

Well, it's a New Year, and I hope it's going great for you (Hope you had a wonderful Christmas too!). I had a heart to heart with another blogger. Can I say blog heart to blog heart? Well, it just so happens that I was up late one night trying to amp up the sociability around this site and this other blogger happened to ask me what I was doing. We got to talking about some of my goals and hopes for Momma's Reviews, and she recommended I take a different approach. It's something that's been on my mind, and I do want to get more beyond the mostly reviews and giveaways that go on here. Though this was the reason I switched from Human Christian to Momma's Reviews, I do want to expand and try some new things to see how it will work out.

I would absolutely LOVE your feedback, which is something I mostly lack, and therefore don't know what type of things that I share are appreciated more than others or not. Hopefully there won't be too much trial and error before I can get that figured out, lol, but bear with me.

For now, i've decided not to focus too much on my Klout score. It's cool if you want better opportunities in working with brands, but unless you're already really active on Twitter and Facebook, it can become quite the task, and it's not something that I have a load of time to put my focus on. I do want to put more attention on Google+. I haven't quite got the hang of things, but I would love to have you join my circle.

I guess that explains enough for now. Thank you for being here and I hope you'll continue to stick around :).

My Second Bladder AKA Potty Training Woes

You may remember back some time ago when I talked about starting to potty train my then 2 year old. Well, he was only 2 at the time and it wasn't going smoothly and I thought i'd put him back in diapers for a while longer. And I did. Well now he's 3 and we're back at it again, and as a matter of fact we have been for a while, but sometimes I feel like I have a second bladder that I have to tell when to go.

I can't ENTIRELY blame him, because our only bathroom is upstairs, and our stairs, in my opinion, are not "normal." They're kinda narrow and at one point I had to learn to count them to make sure I didn't miss one and take a spill, BUT there are those times when we're already upstairs and I tell him to go and he'll tell me "I don't feel like it."

Night before last I believe it was, my husband told him to go up to bed. He had to go upstairs anyway, but decided to pee right there on the stairs! My husband says he thinks it's his way of getting revenge on us and insists I put him BACK in diapers. I just can't. I don't WANT to diaper two children. I don't want to reverse and have to go BACK through this potty training thing with him all over again, but it is REALLY frustrating.

You could not have told me that potty training a child could be as difficult as it has been with him, because although I have a recovering bedwetter whom I think has finally mastered his overnight challenge, I have never had it so hard with either of the others. How about you? Have you had a child that seemed IMPOSSIBLE to potty train? Can you offer me any advice?

So What Was in My Cravebox?

I just wanted to share with you the contents of my Cravebox which are pictured here. The contents included:

Méreadesso which is a lotion that smells minty and citrusy. In my house among the women here, the thoughts of it are mixed. My sister doesn't care for the smell of it. My mom and I both like it. I really like the way it feels on my skin once it's applied. Smooth and ready for cold weather. I checked on the price on this one and it comes in at a hefty $54! I wouldn't pay this for lotion personally, but it felt good to be able to indulge on something expensive without having paid near full price for a change :).

Bic Gel Pens for Her there are two in the pack and they have accents of sophisticated femininity. Comfortable to hold, but when it comes to writing with them, as other gel pens that i've tried in the past, they have an occasional miss when you're writing with them and you have to go back and make minor corrections, no big deal though, unless you're an absolute perfectionist. I couldn't find the price on this particular pack, but i'll assume it around $5.

Bic Ball Pens for Her also come two in a pack. Now these are all out feminine from the barrel to the tip. The writing is fine coming in at 1.0 mm and perfect if you're having an "I wanna write elegantly" moment. It is also ergonomically designed with a grip and the writing is smooth and fluid. I found these for around $4.99.

Nic's Sticks This was my first time trying one of these out and I must say that I appreciate the design and convenience that these offer. Pump, brush and move along. I would have appreciated, though, if it dried better. I went to prepare dinner around 30 minutes or so later and when I sat back down and took a look at my nails, I noticed that a good bit of it was peeling off. It looks like these run around $6.50.

Perugina Dark Chocolate with Almonds Bar. I can't offer an opinion on this other than it made a gift I hope my brother enjoyed. It was his birthday and I know that he likes dark chocolate, and so I slapped a Christmas bow on it and passed it over to him. He was happy to get it. These normally retail for $2.29, but are currently on sale for $1.75 on their website.

Perugina Baci for which I also can not offer an opinion, because I handed these on to my mom, knowing how much she used to like another brand of chocolate covered hazelnuts. These were in a mini pack of two and retail for $1.99.

Just as was stated, I did not have to pay shipping (Yaay!) and I received all of these items. I can't say that they absolutely WOWed me, but I have no complaints otherwise. The value was way more than the $10 that I payed, more like a $75 value rounded and not including tax. I was able to gift one for a birthday, and use one as a "just because" sorta thing.

I guess this is going to be the standard, with a slight switch up. As per the Cravebox FAQ's each month's products will be largely the same, but the colors and flavors may vary from month to month. I plan to stick around for at least another couple of months to see what else is in store, and so that I can decide if i'm in for the long haul.

When I told my 5 year old he would be receiving Comfy Critter Seymour the Shark and showed him what it was, he could not wait until it got here. Whenever he saw a box that seemed large enough arrive, he'd be right there waiting for me to open it. Well we received it, and he loves it.

He puts it on and becomes shark boy...

Now I normally wouldn't allow him to take a blanket to church with him, but since he would be hanging out with other kids in a setting where they let the kids just have fun anyway, I allowed him to bring it just once, and boy did he have fun!

I'm sure he was headed out the door intending to use this as a replacement for his coat during this wintery Chicagoland weather, and of course I had to intervene. It was totally cool with me when he asked to come back down for it after being sent to bed, though. I should have just kept it a secret, and given to him as a Christmas gift, buuuut if I did that, I wouldn't be able to let you know what I think about it, or should I say he thinks about it. I personally like it. It's kid friendly and seeing the way it makes my son happy leaves me feeling a little extra bubbly as well.

Oral B for Me #Momparty

Even before kids can talk, they will find some way to fight over the things that they want. They have to have something that's all their own. Apparently Oral B knows how important this is, because they have toothbrushes that are designed for smaller mouths, whether your children are toddlers or tweens.

Even more importantly, the designs of the toothbrushes are smaller, which means they fit better into children's smaller mouths, which means they can reach areas that they couldn't otherwise reach easily with larger, adult size toothbrushes.

These are some of the things that we received so that we could have a get together and introduce the Oral B lineup that is designed for children. Each of the children received toothbrushes, toothpaste, flossers, and Cars themed gummy vitamin samples (which are actually really good by the way). We also received a Cars 2 dvd along with popcorn to make for a fun movie night.

The kids enjoyed the movie, and were more than eager to try out the oral care products from Oral B designed just for kids like them.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a Blogger Bash held by Craftsman and if a guy in your life is into do it yourself projects small or large, Craftsman has something for him.

Even before my husband went to school, the occasional need for a tool arose. Putting together kids toys, occasional minor car repairs, and just little fixer-upper jobs that pop up around the house call for tools. Now that he has completed several certifications and is working in the computer field, he is in need of a wider range of tools. Some that I thought would be perfect for him, whether he would use them around the house or on the job, include the following from these new products released just in time for the gift giving season that Christmas is:

I really like that the first two of them have lights on them. All of them are small enough so that they can easily go wherever he goes. Now all of these are perfect for him even more so because we're still renting, and we can put in a call for maintenance when a bigger job needs to be done.

My #ChiTag Experience #Giftguide

Whether it was because the children are a year older or because we knew more of what to expect, the Chicago Toy and game was a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for us this year. I really got to engage with some of the toy makers/manufacturers and find out more in depth about their toys and i'll be sharing some of my favorites in this post.

The Bogo from Razor was probably my 9 year old's favorite. He was determined to master this thing in one day, although it was his first time giving one of these try. Unfortunately for him, he had to give it up so that others could try it out and we could see what else was new and exciting. Of course it brought back childhood memories. This one has a twist though; it's been redesigned so that it can have more bounce by way of a bow assisting spring. I like that it's something my son actually wanted to do that meant getting some physical fitness in for his body.

Some of my personal favorites at ChiTag were these guys here. The red one is Brobo, and all the others are his friends. I especially liked the line of them that are designed for children who are afraid of the dark. You touch a certain body part, (the tail for the dog and the arm for all the others) to the chest, and doing so provides 5 minutes of light. The story of Brobo is that he is a futuristic small robot with a big heart and a huge imagination. It is my understanding that a cartoon and much more are in the works.Though the site for these guys is still pending public release, you can check out their Facebook Page.

I really enjoyed the board games presented by Maranda Enterprises. These games present a nice way to relax and just use your brain and have fun the old fashioned way. When I first looked at them, I guess I automatically assumed they would be complicated and I wouldn't feel like taking time to learn them with so much else to see. I'm glad I did stop to ask, because I found out that some were really just a twist on classics such as Dots and Connect Four, and others, though they would require more thought, were still fun and a sure way to exercise and develop your brain and thinking capacity. All of the games are designed so that there's never a tie, so there's always going to be a sure winner.
I'd also seen a couple of teenagers (or tall tweens) playing with something called a Spring Ring, and just found out that it's made by Maranda Enterprises as well. Perfect for two players, and there are options to make for indoor or outdoor play.

What boy can resist some type of gun? Mine thought the Vapor gun was really cool. The ammo that goes with it is 90% water based and it has a cool squishy feeling to it. I think it was just perfect that they had a target practice setup. It looks like the site hasn't launched for these yet either, but Vapor Blaster is currently on Facebook.

One last toy i'd like to point out is the Poofin. Well, it's really not a toy, but something I found to be a unique way for kids to create, store and share memories. I think it's neat that if they don't have a predesigned mini pillow, a.k.a. charm, you can go to their site and create your own and have it sent to you. You stuff the charms off into the larger star pillow and you can take it along with you to show off the charms and share what sentimental value each has to you. Poofin also has a YouTube channel where you can check out some videos and get a better visual.

I'm hoping to find time to look back through the documentaries that I mentioned above, and prepare some questions that I would like to know the answers to. Well, I received this adorable stuffed robot earlier this week. I really like that it feels like it was built to last. At 18 inches, it was bigger than I thought it would be from just looking at the pictures. It has a little pocket on the back which contains a heart (you can see the outline on the picture to the right. I have been asked what the buttons on the back do and would like to point out that they're just there to add to the cuteness and imaginary play. My kids wanted to claim it as theirs, but i'm still not sure if i'm ready to give this one up ;). Even more than the how adorable Kauzbots are, these guys have purpose, and after doing some research, I wanted to share more with you about Kauzbots.

There is so much to be thankful for and this blog post is dedicated to just a few of those things. I'm thankful for God and His son Jesus and for His Holy Spirit. I'm thankful for family and friends. Although I don't have everything I want, i'm thankful because I have everything I need and our lives have been sustained. I'm thankful for my husband and children; the addition of our new one this year, and the addition of a new niece just a few days ago.

I'm thankful because despite all of the sickness that has hit my loved ones in this year alone, God saw fit to spare our lives. I'm thankful for a loving church family and i'm thankful for extended family.

I'm thankful for you, my readers, because my blog just wouldn't be the same without you. I'm thankful for every brand that had enough faith in me to give me a chance. I could go on and on because there are just so many things to truly be thankful for, but i'll stop just after I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

I recently had a family member tell me that he was so addicted to a particular drink at a particular coffeehouse that there were times he would have to choose between buying this drink or buying himself lunch. With the cost of these coffee house drinks and knowing how much people love coffee, I could definitely see how this could present a dilemma. On top of having to make that choice, there's the getting up earlier, crowds and having to wait in line. There is a solution thanks to Torani.

SheSpeaks recently sent me some Torani syrups to try out for myself. If you can make a cup of coffee, you can do this. It's as simple as adding milk, or whatever type of dairy (or non-dairy) product and then adding the Torani syrup of your choice.

Messy Moment? Who? Me?

With five children, these moments are inevitable. Yeah, I get the whole breast-milk accident thing. This is usually after it's processed through one of two ends of the baby's body, though. There has been no getting around blow-outs. If there's a mom who survived the diaper years without having a blow-out, i'd like to know her secret. Seriously, my newborn has me feeling quite like an amateur. He's gotten me more times than I can count and he just made six weeks.

Then there's the whole growing up I-don't-need-your-help-anymore toddler stage. Add to this stage potty training. Been there. Done that. Doing that and I have this road ahead of me to do all over again. This whole road to independence thing can really work a nerve.

Finally, there are those days where things are just too good to be true. Well not exactly, but, you know, those days where the least expected thing happens when you're least expecting it. You know, the lovely day with the sun shining and you decide you're going to walk to church on a Sunday morning?

Dressed up in my Sunday dressy clothes I was walking to church and I had a moment that up until then I can't recall having ever. Matter of fact, it's the type of moment that you would see on television, and probably haven't seen in real life. Well anyways, I walked under a tree, or maybe I could have been out just under the clear blue sky. Whatever moment it was, a bird decided it would relieve itself just at the moment we were aligned with each other. This was probably the grossest thing EVER to happen to me.

So Your Kids Don't Like Fruit? Try This Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

This parfait is simple to make and tastes good. It's a great way to get the kids involved, and older ones can even do it on their own. You'll need:

Vanilla Yogurt
Fruit of Your Choice ( I chose Pineapples and Grapes)
Crushed Graham Crackers or Granola

If you have smaller children i'll advise cutting the fruit into small pieces.

Start with a layer of vanilla yogurt.

Add a layer of fruit and then crushed graham crackers or granola. Continue to alternate in this way until you have the amount desired. That's it. I told you it would be simple. :)

Did you notice the DS on the table? The kid enjoyed it so much he had to free his hands of a video game.

A Better Thanksgiving Day and Turkey #Giveaway #bglu

The most enjoyable thing for me when it comes to Thanksgiving is getting to see my family that I grew up with together under one roof again. There are 8 of us kids, and between distance and having our own families and responsibilities, there just aren't many other times during the year that we are able to do so.

The obvious next thing is having good food which includes a nice spread of main dish choices, sides and deserts. Growing up, this was the responsibility of us girls and my mom. We may not have appreciated the work we put in so much then, but those are days we reflect on now as adults; the time we spent together in the kitchen, the late nights, chit-chatting while waiting for everything to get done, the sweet and savory scents that filled the house and finally the payoff of enjoying the benefits of our labor when everyone would come together.

The only thing that really presents an issue with me is the planning and preparation, which I usually fail to do early enough in advance. I mean all of the food from year to year is pretty much the same, but there's always wanting to make sure everything is just right. I usually end up waiting until the kids are in bed before getting a good start, which means I end up being up really late and not wanting to get up the next morning which means we're sure to eat later than everyone would prefer.

Thankfully Butterball understands that sometimes we can use a hand when it comes to preparing for the big day that Thanksgiving is to so many. I was recently on the Butterball site and was pleased to find out the proper way to stuff a turkey. I also enjoyed seeing a video in which I learned a much neater way of carving a turkey. I also have a new found appreciation for the LeapFrog Tag Reading system as we got a hold of some new accessories including the map pictured here, and some new books to add to our collection. The Tag Reading system uses a pen-like device, which when scrolled across specially designed books, it reads. It helps children to break down words and helps expand their vocabulary. It's also interactive with the pictures in those books as well. I like the challenges that are included which makes a game out of learning and thereby makes learning fun for my children.

LeapFrog continues to provide just the kind of learning that I appreciate as a parent. I do wish they were around when I was a kid, but i'm so glad that they're around for my children. The LeapPad and Tag Reading System help children to learn in a fun way, and also allow them to enjoy being creative, which to me is just a perfect balance. Leapfrog products have proven time and again that learning doesn't have to be boring. They're perfect tools to get your children away from the television and traditional video games. I feel much better knowing that something positive comes from my children having fun.

Love Your Daughter and Teach Her to Love Herself

I recently watched a thought provoking documentary. This documentary talked about how the media has influenced us and how it's influencing our children by defining what's beautiful. Images that enter our thoughts and sub-conscious by way of television, magazines and billboards. It got me to thinking about my daughter and how much I can personally affect her when it comes to self esteem. I really want her to feel good about herself without thinking too highly of herself. Two points from this documentary that really stuck out with me were:

1. Don't criticize yourself to or around her i.e. talking about your weight and other features you feel are imperfect
2. Don't criticize the appearance of others

If you criticize yourself or others, your daughter will more than likely find herself using those comparisons and finding things to look down on herself about. This could bring along a life of misery as she tries to attain to some unreachable standard because she feels like she's not as beautiful as the next girl. A life of extreme dieting and weight loss, plastic surgery and whatever other potentially destructive behavior it takes to be up to someone else's standards.

I want to take the time I have with my daughter and work diligently at making sure I do this right. Some goals I have for myself when it comes to her are:

1. Don't compare her to others. It may be that I like the way the neighbors child excels, but instead of using someone else's child as the standard for my own, just let her know what she can do personally to improve in an area.
2. Point out her good qualities.
3. Find a balance. The last thing I want to do is have a conceited child. I want her to know how to treat others respectfully while maintaining a level head. I think a great way to do this is by helping others. Helping others gives you a sense of accomplishment and it just feels good.
4. Spend quality time together doing things like shopping and baking or just taking a walk in the park.
5. I want to make time to give her my undivided attention and ask her about her life, listen to what she has to say and offer feedback.

Soap and Lotion I'm Trying Out On Baby

I decided I would try something new for baby this time. While looking through the selection at Walmart, I spotted these out and decided i'd give them a try.These are made by the Disney brand. I know they make baby products, but didn't know that they made soaps and lotions for babies. I decided to go for them because they're natural.

The lotion is powder fresh scented. It is hypoallergenic, paraben free, dye free and dermatologist tested. It contains shea butter, aloe and oat extract. I like the sweet scent that it has. It leaves my baby's skin feeling soft without feeling oily or greasy.

The baby wash is lavender and chamomile scented. It's designed for hair and body. It's hypoallergenic, sulfate free, dye free and paraben free. It's also tear free and. Now because it's sulfate free, I don't get the suds i'm used to, but if it's safer for his skin, I can deal with that.

They both come in 15oz pump bottles, but I wouldn't have minded having a coupon or two. They ran us right around $4.00 a bottle.

How Everyone is Adjusting to Baby

As I sit here and go back in my mind to 2002 when I had my oldest son, I don't think anyone could have told me and convinced me that I would have five children today. I probably would have snickered a little while thinking to myself "yeah right," but here we are. It's a little insane to me that now when someone asks me how many are there now, I almost have to count. I even had to verify with my husband one time that I was giving the correct number. It's that surreal.

Well, this post is dedicated to letting everyone know how my older children are taking to having a new baby brother...

First i'd like to start with my retired baby. In this post I talked about how he'd been my baby for so long. Longer than any of my other children. I didn't know how he'd take losing his reign as baby of the house. Well the picture you see here of him kissing the baby, that's how he is. Always kissing him. I think he's proud to be a big brother. I even get extra kisses, though mine are becoming less frequent. He's gone on to resume his position as ninja.

Next is our middle man...

He loves the baby. He doesn't give the baby a whole lot of attention, because as a 5 year old, he's usually in his own little world doing his own thing. He does occasionally want to hold the baby, which doesn't have to be for too long as long as he gets to hold him.

And my oldest son:

Can anyone say second dad? My mom and sister were telling me today that when they take the baby to kinda help me out and let me have a few moments to myself, my oldest follows them and tries to take him from them. Those who have given their opinion of who they think the baby looks most like say that he most favors my oldest, so maybe that has something to do with it all. He says that the baby is his best friend and he's the baby's best friend. He is very helpful, though, and any mom can appreciate having a lot of help when it comes to a new baby.

I saved my daughter for last..

She wanted a sister so badly, and we wanted one for her. It was so bad that she bawled when she heard the ultrasound results that determined we were having another boy. I felt bad for her, but I realize God has a plan and something's going to come of this that we just don't understand as of yet. She loves her little brother dearly and i'm sure she wouldn't trade him for the world. She talks baby talk to him like she has some kind of prior experience and she's just an awesome big sister.

I really appreciate all of the help they've all been. Grabbing diapers and whatever else they can do. I thought things would get overwhelming because I just knew everyone would want to hold him all of the time, but I was patient with them and they've gotten used to the new baby. Things have balanced out better than i'd expected.

As a Bzz Agent, I received an offer to get a CarMD device that I just did not want to refuse. We really didn't have the money to spare at the time, but I did not want to let this offer get away, and after a little talking to my husband to convince him, we decided we would make the sacrifice for it.

CarMD uses the same technology as the much higher priced ones that they use at local repair shops. If you have a car that was manufactured in the United States 1996 or later, this will work for you because your car is required to have a port designed for this type of device. This is good if you're looking to purchase a car made in this time frame as well.

It's really simple to use. All you do is install the software on your computer, hook the device up to the port in your car and if you get error codes, you hook it up to your computer, which will let you know what the codes mean. Fortunately, our car isn't having many issues, but of course we wanted to try it out. We got a reading letting us know that our fuel sensor was faulty. Not only that, but it also let us know how much we could expect the parts and labor to cost as well. After doing our own research on parts and labor, we did find that we could get them at a better price than was given.

One of the things I really liked and may not have considered if it wasn't pointed out, was that if you are looking into purchasing a car, you can take the CarMD along with you and get any readings from the car for yourself. This way you don't have to take the salesperson's word for it.

Bathing a Newborn

I'll admit that this isn't the most enjoyable time for me. Babies are very slippery when wet and soapy and therefore you'll need to be extremely careful. Apparently it's not the happiest time for my baby either. He doesn't seem to like being completely undressed, nor is he too excited about being in water, even though I try to make sure the temperature of the water is perfect for him. Fortunately, it's something you only have to do every few days, as you don't want to cause your baby to have overly dry skin.

The first thing you want to do is make sure the temperature in your house is just right. Make sure you have everything on hand that you'll need: 1. Soap that's designed to be gentle on baby's skin. If the soap isn't suitable for hair washing as well, you'll also need a gentle shampoo if you plan to wash baby's hair. 2. A washcloth and 3. A towel to dry baby. I do like the ones with the little hood on one of the corners, but it's not a must.

You'll also want to make sure you have baby's things together for when his bath is complete. These include 1.Any toiletries you plan to use, lotion, *baby powder (see note below) any diaper rash cremes you may use if applicable. 2. His diaper 3. A change of clothes.

One thing I like to have is a mesh sling. Matter of fact, it's one of my must-haves when there's a baby to be bathed. To me, it's the perfect invention because it makes me feel so much more secure when dealing with a slippery baby. It provides just the support that I need. It will work great with the baby bathtub or on its own. I've taken some pictures of mine so that you'll know what i'm talking about.

Alright, on to the bathing. There are devices that you can use to make sure the water is the perfect temperature for your little one. He won't be able to take water as hot as you may like it. If you don't have a device, your wrist or back of your hand will do just fine. Be sure not to use too much water; just a few inches worth will do. I personally like to keep the dry towel on my shoulder, but make sure it's nearby. The sooner you can get baby wrapped and warm, the happier you'll both be.

Start off cleaning baby's face. Be sure to use separate corners of the towel for baby's eyes. Next clean baby's ears. Now you'll want to put soap on your washcloth. You won't need a lot, no more than the size of a quarter if you're using the small baby washcloths (bigger washcloths will need slightly more). Start behind baby's ears. You'd be surprised at how smelly it can get there.

Work your way down to baby's neck. You'll probably need to use one hand to gently raise baby's head to get in there good. As you work your way down, be sure to cover all possible nooks and crannies as they tend to have a bit of lint and can smell bad as well. I like to save the head washing for last. The whole rinse and repeat normally isn't necessary.

If you don't have it there already, open the dry towel completely and drape it on one shoulder. You can help hold it open better with your chin. Lift the baby with both hands and bring him to the towel and wrap him.

Once you get him to your designated changing area, lotion him starting at the top of his body, by exposing only one arm or leg at a time, covering them back up as you go until baby is completely lotioned. This will help keep him warm and calm, and can help keep you from getting peed on, especially if it's a boy. Next you'll want to powder baby's bottom or use whatever creams you may be using. Diaper and dress the baby.

*My note on baby powder. This is not something I use all of the time. I've heard that baby powder is not safe to breathe in, for baby or anyone else. If you use baby powder, be sure to sprinkle it as close to baby's bottom as possible and use it sparingly.

My Birth Story... Meet the Newest Member of Our Team

Whew!! Let me first start off by saying that this pregnancy seems like it lasted FOREVER! Some of you may have noticed the days until widget sitting there was somewhere beyond 40 weeks, and that would be because it took, well, over 40 weeks. It was more like 41 weeks plus 6 days! Our little guy just didn't want to come on his own.

I'd done more research with this pregnancy as far as having a baby naturally. I'd wished I had more resources and felt more comfortable with the whole "at home" scene. I had planned in my heart and mind that I was going to let nature take it's course and try my hardest for an unmedicated, unassisted birth. But as you know, things don't always go as we'd like for them to.

I had been doing quite well making it to my prenatal appointments and everything was going well. It was time for the bi-monthly appointments to start when we up and left for Louisiana to support my mother-in-law, who had gotten the diagnosis that she had cancer and was going to be having surgery to have it removed. During our time in Louisiana in the hottest of heat it seemed, my Braxton- Hicks contractions became more frequent and I just knew i'd end up delivering while we were there. My mother in law even joked that we would be side by side in the hospital.

I do not under any circumstances advise you to not keep up with your prenatal exams, but during my stay in Louisiana, I neglected to try to find a doctor to keep check on things. We'd planned to be gone about 2 weeks, but that ended up turning into a little over a month. When we got back, I didn't follow up with my doctor right away here either. I was still having those Braxton- Hicks and figured things would start on their own soon enough. 40 weeks, 41 weeks.. no baby.

Well, with a little bit of pressure from family members to go ahead and see why progress wasn't happening, at 41 weeks and 1 day, I went ahead and called my OB. They wanted me to come right in for a non-stress test. I went in the same day and everything was looking great..... except that the baby, according to the ultrasound, was looking to weigh around 10 lbs 3 oz. Up until now, my oldest had been my biggest at 8 lbs 5 oz. The staff tried to talk me into staying for an induction, but left it up to me since things were fine otherwise. I was still holding out on hope that this would happen on this own, hopefully in a day or so. I was scheduled to return to my OB the following Monday to make sure things were still going well. I just knew I would not make it back for that appointment, because my body would surely go into labor on its own sometime during the weekend.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and then Monday rolls around. No labor. No baby. Into the OB's office at 2:30 as scheduled I go. Oh. my. gosh. had I angered my doctor for waiting so long! He told me I need to go over to labor and delivery immediately. He looked at the estimation of the baby's size and tried to persuade me to have a c-section. Something i'd never had, nor did I want. He warned me that because of the baby's size, he could suffer shoulder dystocia and some other possible risks. I was determined that at least I would not give in to this. This baby wasn't much bigger than my oldest and i'd already relaxed things from pushing out the others before. I was thinking I think I can do this. We did go ahead and get over to labor and delivery, and by 4:30 the pitocin was started.

Things only progressed slowly. By the time I hit 5 cm progress pretty much stopped. The doc had them up my pitocin, but the baby's heart rate dropped drastically, so the nurse turned it down. My doctor then decided to rupture my membranes. It was at this time we discovered that the baby had passed meconium while in utero. This could have been due to the baby being overdue or because he was stressed. We were informed that immediately after he was born he would be whisked away and suctioned so that when he took that first breath, he wouldn't inhale the meconium which could cause pneumonia and call for an extended stay in the nursery. A scalp monitor was inserted to better monitor the baby's heart rate, and also something else was inserted in an attempt to flush out the meconium.

I had previously opted for pain meds in my iv if things started to seem unbearable but after my water was broken, and taking into consideration that I had already been laboring, though assisted, for almost 10 hours I asked for an epidural. Something i'd never given in to and really had planned not to, but this was the longest i'd been in labor with any child, and it was late and I was thinking well maybe i'll get some rest while we wait for things to move along. I signed the consent form for an epidural.

I was instructed to sit on the side of the bed and told the position I would need to be in for the anesthesiologist. As we waited for the anesthesiologist to get there, the pain quickly grew unbearable. My husband said I let out the loudest scream ever! My mom, who was also there noticed the nurse asking me what I felt. This got her a little worried, because she was thinking the nurse should have known what was going on. I told her I have to push.

Before long, there were about 10 people in scrubs in the room and I was on my back being instructed to hold my legs right behind my knees. When the next contraction came I was instructed to push. I pushed with all my might! I was determined no baby was going to be lodged in my birth canal, I was going to get him out as soon as possible and the pain was going to stop. At 2:49 a.m. we welcomed our little guy to the world. He was whisked away, and since he let out a cry, instead of inhaling before letting out that cry, the meconium didn't enter his lungs, and everything turned out just fine. After all was said and done, I realized that i'd done this with no meds for pain whatsoever. A first for me. This pregnancy was more challenging than any other had been for me, but we made it.. and we're enjoying him.

Preparing Your Home for Baby's Arrival

It can be challenging when preparing for a new baby. Although some of you may like to call me a veteran, let me assure you that since I haven't had a newborn around in a little over three years now, i've definitely had to freshen up on what to expect. As a mom who has diapered for 9 years straight since the birth of my first child though, I know the importance of having plenty of diapers on hand. This is especially important if you're awaiting the arrival of a new little one. I mean, the hospital gives you a little bit of a start with the small pack of diapers they have, but you'll find that they very soon run out. And if you're like me, you'll likely be out of circuit with the outside world until your body gets at least some kind of recovery.

Whether you're having your first or you've done this a few times, you've probably heard that a new baby's skin can be really sensitive. If you've heard of Seventh Generation, then you know that they make products that are designed to be environmentally safe and also better for you and your family. Well did you know that they make diapers for babies ranging from newborn sizes up to stage 6? Their diapers are free of components that could otherwise irritate your baby's sensitive skin. Free of chlorine processing, free of latex and perfumes and free of petroleum based lotions.

They also make wipes that are designed to be gentle on your baby's skin. The ingredients in their wipes are plant derived. They're also free of fragrances, alcohol, synthetic cleaners and free of dyes. The wipes are also free of chlorine processing.

Some other tips when preparing for baby that i'd like to share with you follow:

Preparing Your Home for Your Newborn

1. Make sure your crib meets current safety regulations. I'm an Illinois resident, and the sale of crib bumpers was recently banned because of the suffocation risk. You can find more on crib safety at the CPSC site.

2. Although it's tempting to splurge on newborn clothing, try not to overdo it. You'll find that baby doesn't need a whole lot. I find that onesies, jumpsuits, socks and hats are pretty much all that I use. An outfit or two that are more on the dressy side should do if you want to have pictures taken. Your baby will outgrow those newborn clothes before you know it, so invest in a few 3-6 and 6-9 month size clothing instead of spending your baby budget on newborn items.

3. Prepare any younger siblings for the new baby. Consider watching shows together that focus on siblings and reading books to help your other child/ren know what to expect and how they'll be able to help out.

Preparing for the Ride Home

1. Make sure you have a good car seat. A new one is preferable, as an older one or a used one may not meet current safety standards and may have even possibly been in an accident, which may render it less safe. A great site to check out is NHTSA, which will give you more details as far as car seat safety and even car seat laws for your particular state.

2. Be sure to place the baby in the rear seat, facing back. I know it's sad to not be able to look back and see baby's face, but it's just safer for him.

Arriving Home With Your Newborn

1. Take it easy. Your baby won't have an established schedule and therefore you'll lose yours as you give in to his demands. Rest when he's resting as much as you can and avoid the urge to try to resume life as you knew it too soon. Things will begin to balance as baby gets a little older and you'll find your way.

2. Accept help if it's offered to you and know who you can talk to if you begin to feel overwhelmed.

As Baby is Growing

1. As baby gets older, and the time for solid foods begins, know what's safe for baby to eat. I was a bit angry when I happened to find out babies under the age of 1 couldn't have honey. Not because I was dying to give it to my baby, but the way I happened to stumble on this information that could have meant life or death. I couldn't believe no one thought to tell me that. A good read for more information can be found here.

2. Consider making at least some of your baby foods from scratch and fresh produce. This way you know exactly what's going into these foods and nourishing your baby.

3. Baby-proof your home. Before you know it, baby will be crawling and then walking, all while getting into everything. Make sure that anything that can pose a hazard is out of reach. A good way to do this is to get down to baby's level so that you can see things from his point of view. Secure your cabinets where harmful items may be, try to make any sharp corners safe with the use of bumpers and plug those unused outlets with outlet covers.

Aren't these Zhu Zhu Babies absolutely adorable?? Well my daughter and I both thought so. Hopefully you got a chance to watch the video and see how they work.

We received the Dance Recital playset and I think it's really neat. You need an adult Zhu Zhu to work along with it. There is space for other Zhu Zhu adults to act as the audience. The stage appears to be designed for 4 babies and when the adult Zhu Zhu at the piano plays, the babies start to dance. If you lift the "curtain", other dancers will be revealed.

My daughter was really happy to receive these. I thought it was especially great because she is an only daughter for my husband and I. I know that she has cousins who would love to get their hands on them as well, but I needed to restrict them until this review was done.

Remembering 9/11. My Personal Account.

As far as I can recall, i've never posted any tributes or such to the memories of 9/11. This being the tenth year of my marriage and also the tenth year anniversary of this nightmare, I figured now would be a good time to share my memories...

It was the year 2001. July 3rd, i'd gotten married to my husband who was, at that time, in the United States Navy and stationed in California. I was adjusting to being away from family and starting life as a new wife. Around a month and a couple of weeks later, we'd found out we were expecting our first child. Time went on, but not much...

On September 11, 2001 I was abruptly awakened by my husband who told me that the Twin Towers had been bombed. What were the Twin Towers? They didn't carry any significance with me. If he'd said the Sears Tower, definitely, but I didn't grow up knowing of many other Towers. He sat there watching the news, and I sat there with him. I was concerned because he should have been at work already. It wasn't long before I learned that the Twin Towers were two prominent buildings in New York. We watched intently. Replay after replay of that first building being hit.... and then the second... and later the Pentagon.

"Milcah, we're going to war!" I remember my husband saying. He was scheduled for an upcoming tour to Egypt and let me know then that he wouldn't be surprised if they left Egypt and went straight to Iraq from there. What would happen? Where would I go? What about our unborn child? If he went, would he make it back alright? ...But we haven't even been together that long. Sadness and confusion.

He went ahead to work. I waited for a phone call with an update. I suppose that's pretty much all they did at work that day... watch the news to see if anything else would go down. Fortunately nothing else did.

Time went on and my husband went on his tour to Egypt. He did only stay for a month and was able to come back. Shortly thereafter, they started deploying the troops to avenge the lives that were lost. My husband didn't have to leave in that first round, but I remember him having to stay behind some late nights and hold the fort down due to a shortage of staff. His tour to Iraq would have come around, but it just so happened that he was being moved to another duty station, so he just missed having to go.

I'm so glad that in the end he was able to stay stateside, but it goes without mention, all the lives that were lost during the resulting wars on terrorism. Thoughts that can get you down if you let them go too deep for all of the lives that were lost in the attacks and as a result of them. Sadly, we're still seeing the effects. 10 years later.

In closing, i'd like to share a touching post made by a Facebook Friend:

A decade ago we all woke up to horror, fear, sadness, and anger...In the weeks and months following a change happened. We were not rich/poor, black/white, Dem/Rep, Yankees/Southerners, liberal/conservative, east coast/west coast, white collar/blue collar...we were simply Americans united. For a time we were One Nation Under God.

I was recently sent two new Carmex flavors to try out which include Lime Twist and Vanilla. From the information sheet I found out that these lip balms have three additional moisturizers that are not found in the original line. If your concerned about sunscreen, they also come with an SPF 15.

My Thoughts:
These are undeniably Carmex products. You still get that medicated feeling that you come to expect from Carmex. I would have liked the flavors to have a little more of a lasting presence in these lip balms. The Vanilla has just a hint, so if a hint is all you're looking for, this will be perfect for you. I personally like the Lime Twist the best. I immediately noticed the lime scent and it seems to last a bit longer.

Many, if not all of you know that i'm having another baby. For us this is baby number 5. I haven't expressed my concerns to you here. Until now.

Well let's start with the fact that it's been over 3 years since i've had a newborn around. I, like you, would think that naturally, this should be a cinch. I mean, I have four for goodness sake. It seems that to add to the fact that this pregnancy has been more difficult than any of the others, that i've forgotten a lot. I've been finding myself reading up like i'm having my first all over again. To say the least, it was comforting when I read an article letting me know that i'm not alone.

My next challenge is my current youngest. He's been my baby all of this time. And i've very much treated him that way. Thank God my husband has been stern with him in trying to get him out of baby-hood, because I don't completely have the guts to do so. He's been doing surprisingly well. Hopefully it will continue once baby arrives.

Another issue i've been having, as I have with all of the other pregnancies is the fact that I have to go through this whole labor and delivery process all over again. I would love to go completely natural. So far i've completely skipped the epidural and opted for something just to knock the edge off of the pain. I've been reading up on the benefits and would love to experience how things really should be.

We did go ahead and pay for an ultrasound and we found out that we're having another boy bringing us to 4 boys and 1 girl. When my 7 year old daughter found out, she was absolutely crushed. We were really hoping for another girl, but I had a feeling it just wasn't going to happen this time either. She's finally accepted that she's having another brother, but I can't help feeling sorry for her. I just tell her that God has a reason for everything, and though we may not understand now, maybe someday it will all be clear.

I have just over a month to reach my predicted due date, and i'm trying not to get too anxious as the aches of things getting into place happen. I'm really hoping for a somewhat earlier than predicted birth date and hoping it won't be one of those days when I just absolutely don't feel like dealing with it.

Try This Dinner Recipe!

I've recently discovered a local magazine that is a great information source for local area happenings. Being that the name of the magazine is Chicago Parent, of course it's shares parenting tips AND recipes. Things that are centered around family.

I found this recipe, and made it (my personal picture above) and since 5 out of 6 of us liked it, I thought i'd share it with you.

You will need:
1 pound of lean ground beef
8 ounces of assorted fresh wild mushrooms sliced ( I used the regular off white ones along with portabello)
1 package of wild rice with seasonings ( I used Uncle Ben's)
1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes not in oil sliced (I used some that my hubby found in a resealable bag in the produce section at our local Dominick's
1/2 cup shredded italian blend cheese

Preheat oven to 375. In a large nonstick skillet, add your ground beef and mushrooms. Cook 8-10 minutes making the beef into crumbles. Drain any fat and add wild rice, seasoning packet and tomatoes. Transfer this into a 2 quart baking dish and add the water that the rice instructions call for along with an additional 1/2 cup of water. Cover with foil and place into the oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until water is absorbed. Remove foil, sprinkle with cheese and put back into oven about 5 minutes or just until cheese is melted. Plate and enjoy.

Our Trip to Grand Rapids

When I found out we'd have the opportunity to visit Grand Rapids, Michigan, I didn't realize we would be in for such a treat. It is the perfect destination for a family vacation! We live about an hour outside of Chicago, and traffic going was awful going through Chicago, but it was smooth sailing from there and very much worth it.

We ran into some really friendly people during our visit to Grand Rapids and that was definitely a plus in making my family feel welcome.

The first night we just kinda hung around in our hotel room after getting food, because the prolonged ride there would have left us just a little time to really enjoy the sights.

While there, we visited the Sculpture Park, the John Ball Zoo (I remember the name easily because our 4 year old was so excited about visiting that he just kept repeating the name) and also the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

The Sculpture Park, to me, was such a peaceful place to be able to walk through. It's just so natural, surrounded by beautiful floral arrangements with some very interesting sculptures by some very talented people. When we were getting our tickets, our youngest son fell and was obviously shaken out. I was a little freaked out by the amount of attention he got as a result. One woman took our name and phone number and security came along and did the same. Once we got past that, though, the beauty and serenity of the sculpture park left me feeling a lot more peaceful. The rain that started caused us to have to rush through the last little bit, but this was an experience I won't soon forget.

The next day, which would be the day we would leave, we squeezed in a visit to the John Ball Zoo and also to the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

I really appreciate how neat things are kept in the city of Grand Rapids. You can tell that the citizens care about it. And it seems there's always something to do. Something else that I was really pleased with. I wanted to be able to visit some of the Farmer's Markets and get fresh fruits and vegetables. If we had visited a month later, I think we would have hit the perfect season, but from the little research that i'd done, I don't think there was a lot in season.

There was even more that I would have loved to do, such as visit the Gerald Ford Museum and the Art Museum, or even find out why Grand Rapids is for foodies, but unfortunately time limited us. If given the opportunity to visit again, i'd definitely take it!

Pregnancy Update

Just wanted to give a little update with what's going on these days. First let me start by saying that at my last doctor's appointment, I asked when another ultrasound would be done. I was told that it wouldn't. The only time they do a second ultrasound is if there's a medical reason, so for now this baby is a surprise. We're hoping we can find somewhere that will do an ultrasound at a price that would be reasonable.

Night before last I was able to see little movements from the baby. It's becoming more active and 2 of my children got to feel the little kicks that this little one is doing in there. I still get pretty sleepy, and still mostly fighting sleeping because of the desire to stay awake during the day, but there are the times where I do cave in. Otherwise things are pretty normal around here... whatever that is.

Hormel Compleats for Kids Review

There were several things that had me excited about the opportunity to do this review. The first being that it's a simple way to get food into my kids' tummies. When the box arrived, I liked the variety and some statements that were on the packaging. As you can see from the picture above, it says that it's healthy for kids.

Some other things I couldn't help but notice were that it has fiber, no preservatives, no artificial colors and no trans fat. Another big plus was that they're ready in only 45 seconds.

Unfortunately, when my kids did try them, with the exception of my youngest, they did not like them. Whatsoever. They were trying to dress them up to make them taste better, but nothing did the trick. I could not see how they wouldn't like them, so I gave a taste of one for myself. It reminded me a lot of stage 3 baby food.

I guess I went under the assumption that they're "healthy food for kids" and didn't even check the sodium content. The buzz going around is that there's a large amount. Just to taste it, I wouldn't have otherwise known. I thought they tasted a little on the sweet side.

I really love the idea of meals that are convenient for my kids, but quality is an extremely important factor as well. There are some other Hormel products out there that I like and I would love to see Hormel Compleats improved upon as far as flavor and sodium content goes, but for now, i've decided these are not for us.

14 Weeks Pregnant

Today marks the 14th week of pregnancy for me. I have good news in reaching this week... i'm starting to feel SO much better. I still get those moments of being tired which leave me to wonder if my thyroid isn't completely back to normal, but my appointment is today, which means they'll be doing more bloodwork which will determine if this is the case. I do account getting better to much prayer and faith to a faithful God. That will about wrap it up for now, just wanted to update you all, and hopefully that means i'll be able to pick up a little bit more here.

Update on My Pregnancy

I finally made it to my first prenatal exam last week. They did the standard talk and blood draw along with other things that are normally done at an OBGYN visit when one finds out they're going to have a baby.

Upon doing the internal pelvic exam to estimate how far along I may have been, the physician's assistant informed me that I was around 8-10 weeks along. This did raise a concern for me, because early January I had to go to the hospital because of a rapid heartbeat. The hospital's pregnancy test was negative, so they went through with a cat-scan to make sure I didn't have a blood clot. I was once told that having a cat-scan is equivalent to having 200 x-rays! I mentioned this to my doctor, and I guess if the x-ray would have done any harm, I would have miscarried.

I later received a call and I was glad to hear the news that everything else was okay regarding my lab results, but I did also hear that my thyroid function was low, which apparently explains why i've been so burned out. They said that this can happen during the first trimester, but they'll check again during the second.

I also had to return to the doctor's office on Monday (on the way there we were rear-ended because it was super slippery outside!), but didn't suffer much damage at all. I had an ultra-sound to see just how far along we were, partially due to irregular menstrual cycles. Turns out we were 10 weeks and 5 days along, so today i'm 11 weeks exactly.

I've been able to hold food and fluids down much better. I didn't mention how I had to go to the emergency room for this, because I was holding down almost nothing and was drained of energy more than I can ever recall being in my life. I was prescribed anti-naseau meds at the time which helped somewhat. I have since stopped taking them.

So that about sums up what's going on for now. Hopefully i'll be back to my old strength shortly and you'll see more of me here with updates and more. Well, I do have a couple more posts that I need to get up, but I want to be able to post on a more regular basis instead of every 2 weeks or so.. Stay tuned.

Dr. Miracle's, My Hair Needs a Miracle..

When I was younger, and taking better (in a way) care of my hair, it involved a lot of relaxers and ponytails. I'm sure that most anyone who wears their hair in ponytails often knows of the effects of trying to get the perfect, lay flat ponytail. Your hair really gets thin all around the edges. Been there.

Now that i've gotten older, had children and gone natural, I wear scarves. A lot. Well, way too much. I decided to go natural because I started having scalp issues really young and was concerned that relaxers were no longer the answer for me. The only time I really show my hair is on Sundays for Sunday service. I've really neglected my hair. I've bought less expensive shampoos and conditioners that are not designed for my hair type which is quite coarse, and as a result, I really don't see much growth these days. Especially when weighing in the fact that I have the nerves to try to clip my dead ends.

I've heard of Dr. Miracle's in the past, and if i'm recalling correctly, my mom had a rinse out conditioner that I tried some time ago. I did like the cooling feeling that it left my scalp with. I finally went out and bought some for myself. I decided that I would try the Leave In Treatment and Conditioner pictured above, and i'd love to reverse the effects of tying on scarves too tightly, so I also picked up their Temple and Nape Gro Balm.

I have not yet tried out the Leave in Treatment, but I did try the Temple and Nape Balm in my Temple area. It has a pleasant minty scent to it and you immediately feel the cooling effect it has on your scalp.

While shopping, I also pleasantly discovered that there's a good range of products. I would think everything I need to take care of my hair is covered. The products range from shampoos and conditioners to relaxers and even skin care. I'm looking forward to seeing what these products can do for me!

Still Trying to Get the Hang of This... Again

Just a little heads up. Today I had to go to the ER because i've not been able to keep much of anything down. It's the worst i've had of all of my children. I've lost several pounds, instead of gaining and was just becoming really exhausted after doing much of nothing. The way i've been feeling is the reason i've not been here as much.

Well, I was given a prescription that's supposed to help keep things down. So far it's working. Other side effects include drowsiness and headeache (among some others). These two i've had today so far. I'm hoping the drowsiness is just something related to the lack of being able to keep things down and that once I get myself built up this will pass. I'm also hoping the mild ache on the left side of my head is coincidental. I'd love to be able to share my experience with you all, but just haven't been much up to it.

Besides that, i'm just learning how to be pregnant all over again. It really hit me at an unexpected time. I am definitely keeping prayerful through it. I have more to talk about with my challenges so far, but i'll save these experiences, hopefully for a later post.

Sony Bloggie Touch Camera Review

The Sony Bloggie Touch is a fairly new pocket camcorder. I like the size of it. It's just perfect for on the go. It's an HD camera. It fits right into my purse and is great for capturing those on the go and spontaneous moments. It has many great features that anyone can appreciate.

These features include a decent sized rear touchscreen. It has built in software that makes it easy for you to share your photos and videos through social networking sites. You can also set up family so that your media can be shared with them as well. With this software, as soon as you're done recording, you select, right on camera, with whom you want to share. Once you hook it up to your computer you just need to click one final button and that's pretty much it.

I also like the fact that you can take still pictures at 12.8 megapixels. You can even snap photos while recording. Totally awesome. The camera has face-tracking and does really good focusing on words, provided the lighting is right.

Some things I would love to see improved about this camera is definitely the zooming. It has 4x digital, but things start to get a bit grainy once you hit that 4x mark. I've also seen where others complain about the orientation ability when you hold the camera vertically. The sides get cut off and there's black on the sides of the video. I would personally like to see a flash added to enhance those 12.8 megapixel shots.

All in all, i'm impressed with the features of the Sony Bloggie Touch otherwise. If you can get around those little other things, it's a really nice camera. It's available in 4gb and 8gb options which will allow for 2-4 hours of recording time respectively. The Sony Bloggie Touch can be purchased at Walmart.com for $139 for the 4gb model and $159 for the 8gb model. I'm recommending Walmart.com because the actual in-store prices at my local Walmart were higher and the online prices were not honored. My video review using the Sony Bloggie Touch follows.

Growing up, we had our share of hot dogs at my house. There were eight of us, and being able to feed everyone in a simple, hassle free way was important. I even used to buy them more often; well that was until I heard about the nitrites that are added. This raised a concern for me because of the negative effects that it can have on our bodies (if you haven't heard, I encourage you to Google it). Scary, especially considering so many cases of childhood cancer these days.

I was so excited when I found Oscar Mayer hot dogs free of nitrites and nitrates while shopping at our local Walmart. Bonus 2 for me, they're hardwood smoked, bonus 3, they are made from turkey. They were $1.98 for a pack of 8, and they still taste like hot dogs. It was so ironic because I think it was just the day before that my sister and I were having a "hot dog dangers" conversation. I had to call her right up to inform her of my discovery.

Thanks to Oscar Mayer, I can freely buy hot dogs again. Something I guess nearly all kids love. Peace of mind feels good.

More On My First Mom Blogger Conference

I've posted little things here and there about having the pleasure of attending my first Mom Blogger Conference. Something i'd been wanting to do and finally got the chance to. This particular conference was hosted by Child's Play Communications. I didn't have to get on a plane (yes!), but we did have to brave Chicago traffic. And it was worth it. I had a great time and i'm looking forward to more opportunities like these. Hopefully in the near future.

I really appreciated the mom blogger panel and some things that I learned as a blogger, to help carry me a little further. The brands I had the pleasure of meeting included:

I'm sure we've all heard of Playtex. They make wonderful products for infants and toddlers. From bottles to sippies to diaper pails and more.

We also got to meet and greet with a representative from Road Rippers. More than likely you've seen these little cars when visiting the toy section of Walmart. If you like pressing buttons on toys (like me), you've probably done that too. My boys enjoy the little cars they've received.

Then there's Restaurant.com. I really like that you can get savings at local restaurants at deep discounts. $25 restaurant gift certificates cost you only $10. And they often have specials where you get them for even lower. Talk about saving some money.

Cold Stone Creamery was also there. To try them is to love them. I first became familiar with them when my husband was stationed in California and i've been hooked since.

The of course there was Mega Brands. They make building toys bigger so that younger children can safely play with them. They also debuted some new toys, including a tattoo pen for kids. My kids really like the Thomas Train track.

We also were re-aquainted with these juices by In-Zone brands. Of course kids love them because they feature popular characters that kids can relate to. I'm sure we can appreciate that they're made with 100% fruit juice. They are now available in smaller sizes for younger children. The smaller sizes contain 40% less sugar to be easier on your smaller children. The representative pointed out how moms often add water to juice to cut some of the sugar, well they've taken care of that for you, so it's ready to go.

Any mom can appreciate these toys by Summit Toys. There are the backyard toys. These are going to get your children away from the tv and make outside explorers out of them. Then there are the Zillionaire toys, that help instill money smarts. A skill that's important to have for a lifetime.

And finally, we got mini facials and more information from Mary Kay. They have a line of products that are natural looking and in no way overdone.

I had a wonderful time getting my feet wet with Child's Play Communication. Oh, and the brunch was right on target.. I'll close this post with a couple of the pictures of what I had.
